The Johari Window was created in 1955 by Joseph Luft and Harry Ingham. It is used to help individuals better understand themselves and how they are perceived by others. The window consists of four panes:

  • Open Area.        This is what we know about ourselves and is also known by others.
  • Blind Spot:        This is what we do not know about ourselves and yet others do know.
  • Hidden Area:     This is what we know about ourselves but is not known by others.
  • Unknown:          This is what we do not know about ourselves and others do not know.

A mentor will help the client to shift the borders so that the client knows more about themselves and the blind and unknown areas reduce.  Only as trust grows will the client allow those hidden areas others to be revealed.
